Split Rock (Pleiospilos nelii)

The Succulent Pleiospilos nelii, also known as the Split Rock, Living Rock Cactus, Cleft Stone, or Mimicry Plant, is a visually appealing flower that is indigenous to South Africa. With its distinctive features of two to four gray-green stone-like leaves separated by a cleft, this plant only grows to a few inches in height.

Growing and maintaining these plants is relatively easy, making them a perfect choice for adding a touch of color and unique shape to any indoor space. All it takes is finding the right balance of its care requirements to ensure its optimal growth.

Similar to other succulents, Split Rocks have a high tolerance for drought, making them well-suited for busy individuals. During its growing season in Spring and early Fall, it is recommended to completely saturate the soil when it has dried out. However, during extreme temperatures in Summer and Winter, the watering schedule should be reduced to once every few weeks.

For optimal growth, Split Rocks require partial shade to full sun exposure. When growing indoors, provide as much light as possible, especially during Winter. A south-facing window is ideal, but if not available, consider using grow lights. Outdoors, a garden is suitable, but protect the plant from harsh afternoon sun and rain. Note that Split Rocks are not cold hardy, so in zones colder than 30 degrees Fahrenheit, it's best to grow them in containers for easy bringing indoors during temperature drops.

As a succulent, Split Rock needs well-draining soil as well. You can meet this condition by blending a 25% cactus mix and 75% pumice. And since split rock has a long taproot, the pot size should be at least 3.5 to 4 inches deep with a hole in the bottom for proper drainage. This will lessen the risk of risking your plant to get root rot problems.
