Creating the perfect crested gecko terrarium involves more than just placing your scaly friend in a glass box. To ensure your crested gecko thrives, you need to replicate its natural habitat as closely as possible.
Here are a few essential components to consider when keeping crested geckos:
Invest in a high-quality glass terrarium designed for crested geckos.
Install a heat source (lamp or heat mat) for a 24°C (75f) temperature range.
Add UVB lighting for calcium metabolism and bone health.
To regulate temperature, use a dimming thermostat to control light levels for bulbs and an on/off thermostat to manage heat mats.
Choose a moisture-retaining substrate (bark chips or bioactive).
Add decorative branches and plants for a stimulating environment. Cresties enjoy being active at night, so vines and branches are a favourite.
Incorporate live plants for aesthetics, hiding spots, and humidity. Crested geckos typically prefer tall, broad plants like bromeliads.
Include a feeding ledge and water dish, and explore our selection of treats to keep your crested gecko happy and well-fed.
Maintaining your crested gecko terrarium is crucial for the health and well-being of your gecko. Regular upkeep ensures that the environment remains clean and conducive to your gecko’s needs.
Clean the terrarium regularly to prevent bacterial growth and maintain optimal conditions. This includes wiping down surfaces and removing any waste. Replace the substrate completely every 2-3 months to avoid the buildup of waste and bacteria, which can be harmful to your gecko.
Ensure that the water dish and feeding ledge are cleaned regularly to prevent bacterial growth. Fresh water should be provided daily, and the food dish should be replaced regularly to prevent spoilage.
Monitor the temperature and humidity levels to ensure that the terrarium remains within the optimal range for your crested gecko.
Crested gecko habitats are taller with more climbing options, while leopard gecko enclosures are horizontal with ground-level hides.
An adult crested gecko needs a minimum enclosure size of 45cm wide, 60cm tall, and 45cm deep to allow for climbing and exploration. Hatchlings can thrive in the same size terrarium, but they may feel more secure with additional hides and decorations to reduce stress and provide plenty of cover as they grow.
Pothos (Devil’s Ivy) and some Philodendron species contain compounds that can be mildly toxic, but crested geckos typically don’t chew on plants. If using these, ensure plenty of alternative climbing surfaces and monitor your gecko’s behaviour. Safe options include trailing ficus and other non-toxic, humidity-friendly plants.
Use a mix of coconut fibre, sphagnum moss, and organic topsoil to retain moisture and support plants.
Provide vertical space, live plants, proper lighting, and maintain appropriate temperature and humidity levels.
