About Snakes

Snakes are elongated, legless reptiles found on every continent except Antarctica. There are more than 3,000 species of snakes, ranging from tiny burrowing species only a few inches long to enormous constrictors such as pythons and anacondas. Snakes inhabit a wide variety of environments, including deserts, forests, grasslands, wetlands, and oceans. Their highly specialised bodies allow them to move efficiently across land, through water, and even climb trees with ease.

Snakes are carnivorous predators and feed on a range of prey, including rodents, birds, amphibians, insects, fish, and other reptiles. Different species use different hunting methods. Constrictors overpower prey by coiling around it, while venomous species use specialised fangs to inject toxins that immobilise or kill their prey. Snakes possess an exceptional sense of smell, using their forked tongues to detect scent particles in the air and guide them toward food.

Many snake species make excellent pets due to their calm nature, manageable size, and relatively simple care requirements. Popular pet snakes such as the corn snake, royal python, and king snake are known for being docile and easy to handle. With suitable heating, secure housing, and a proper diet, captive snakes can thrive for many years, making them fascinating and rewarding reptiles for responsible owners.
