About Crested Geckos

Crested geckos are the most commonly kept arboreal gecko in the UK. This is because they don't get very large, are commonly found in reptile centres, are usually very friendly, and much less jumpy than other arboreal geckos. They can display a range of patterns and colours making them a very versatile pet and can live up to 15-20 years.

As a native of New Caledonia the crested gecko will need a relatively warm enclosure with high humidity and ventilation. These geckos usually live in the trees and canopies so will want plenty of height to climb and a number of hard wood decorations to allow them to leap from branch to branch. They would get a small ammount of UV through the canopy so we recommend keeping them with a 5% UVB lamp to ensure they can create their own vitamin D.

The crested geckos diet is usually a mixture of fruit/protein diets and livefoods. For the fruit portion we would usually use meal replacement diets like Repashy Superfoods. For the livefood portion we would usually recommend brown crickets and locust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Crested geckos can tolerate handling, but they don't necessarily enjoy it as a dog or cat might. Each gecko has its own personality—some remain calm, while others may be skittish.

With regular, gentle handling, they can become accustomed to human interaction. Start with short sessions and always handle them with care, avoiding sudden movements to prevent stress. If your gecko frequently jumps away or hides, it's best to limit handling to prevent distress.

With proper care, crested geckos can live 15 to 20 years in captivity. Factors like diet, habitat conditions, and overall health management play a key role in their lifespan. In the wild, they typically live shorter lives due to predators and environmental challenges. To ensure a long, healthy life, provide a balanced diet, maintain proper humidity, and keep their enclosure clean and stress-free.

Crested geckos thrive on a diet of powdered crested gecko food, which is specially formulated with the right nutrients. You can supplement this with fresh fruit, such as mashed banana or mango, and occasional live insects like gut-loaded black crickets or locusts for added protein.

Avoid citrus fruits, as their acidity can cause digestive issues. Always provide fresh water in a water dish and ensure their diet is varied to support overall health.

Crested geckos reach a length of 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) from snout to tail when fully grown. They typically weigh between 35 and 55 grams. Their growth rate depends on diet, habitat conditions, and genetics. Hatchlings start small at around 2 inches (5 cm) but grow rapidly within their first year. A well-balanced diet and a properly maintained enclosure for crested geckos will help them reach their full size.

Crested geckos do not necessarily need a heat lamp if their enclosure stays within the ideal temperature range of 22–26°C during the day and 18–24°C at night.

However, if your home is particularly cool, a low-wattage heat source like a ceramic heat emitter or an under-tank heat mat can help maintain stable temperatures. Avoid strong basking lamps, as excessive heat can cause dehydration and stress. Always monitor temperatures with a high-quality thermometer, ideally digital, to keep their environment safe.
