From climbing branches and cosy hideouts to even a snake hammock, there are plenty of creative ways to make their space enriching, without spending a fortune. Everyday items like clean paper tubes or sturdy sticks can add variety, helping to mimic their natural environment while keeping things budget friendly.
A great enclosure isn’t just about looks. It’s about making sure your corn snake feels secure, stimulated, and at home. So, let’s look into some simple yet effective corn snake enclosure ideas to build the perfect habitat.
Understanding Corn Snakes’ Needs
Corn snakes are among the most popular pet snakes in the UK, cherished for their calm demeanour, manageable size, and relatively simple care needs. To ensure your pet corn snake thrives, it’s essential to understand their specific needs and replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible within their enclosure.
Natural Habitat and Behaviour
Corn snakes are native to the south eastern regions of the United States, where they thrive in temperate climates. In the wild, they are often found in wooded groves, rocky outcrops, and meadowlands. They are diurnal creatures, meaning they are most active during the day. While they are primarily ground-dwelling, corn snakes are also skilled climbers and can occasionally be found in trees. However, they generally prefer the safety and cover provided by the ground, often seeking refuge in caves, under rocks, logs, and bushes. Understanding these natural behaviours is important before you begin creating an environment that keeps your corn snake healthy and happy.
6 Considerations When Choosing the Right Enclosure
We need to consider what materials suit your needs, sizes appropriate for your pet’s growth, optimal temperature and lighting, the perfect bedding… and then we can move onto the fun stuff: decorating!
-
Sizing Considerations for Corn Snakes
Proper sizing of the enclosure is vital to your corn snake’s wellbeing. Adult corn snakes often require an enclosure that is at least 3x2x2ft, and large females need up to 4x2x2ft. This size allows them ample space to move around and explore.
A young corn snake can be a little shy, they can be housed in smaller cages, around 3x2x2ft and you can upgrade them to a larger space as they grow. However, because they still require the same heat and light gradients as adults, we suggest starting off with your big tank and filling it with more decorations and hiding spots when they’re young, so they don’t feel too exposed. Then as they grow, you can gradually begin to remove these.
-
Material and Design
The materials used in the design of a snake cage are as important as the cage itself. Glass offers durability and visibility but requires more care to manage heat and humidity. Plastic cages are lightweight and better at retaining heat. They’re also less breakable. Our corn snake vivariums are all wooden as they keep the heat stable, making them perfect for your corn snake. They’re sturdy, stylish, and can even help lower heating costs in colder climates.
The design should include secure lids or doors to prevent escape, along with features like heat lamps and heat mats to maintain the right temperature. Decorative elements such as hides and climbing branches can make the enclosure more enriching for your snake.
Using clean rocks and plenty of fake plants adds to the natural environment, making it more comfortable for your pets.
-
Temperature and Humidity Levels
Much like us, corn snakes don’t like it to be too hot or too cold. To keep your corn snake happy and healthy, maintaining the right temperature and humidity is key.
A temperature gradient works best, letting your snake move between warmer and cooler areas as they would in the wild. Placing a heat mat and basking lamp on one side of the enclosure creates this effect, with the warm side around 32°C (90f) and the cool side near 24°C (75f).
-
Lighting
While UVB lighting is not crucial for corn snakes as they don’t require it to use their calcium, providing a light cycle helps establish a natural day-night rhythm. UVB lighting is optional, but it can be beneficial as it simulates natural sunlight. While a basking light can help with this, adding a secondary UVB or LED lamp is recommended to reinforce the light cycle.
A Ferguson Zone 1 UVB setup is ideal for a corn snake. A 2-5% T8 UVB tube, a 2-5% T5 UVB tube, or a more compact but stronger unit should work well too. Mount the UV tube on the ceiling at the back of the enclosure to create a light gradient that aligns with the temperature gradient. Since your corn snake may sometimes seek less or no UVB exposure, including both partial and full hiding spots across the width of the enclosure is a good idea.
-
Substrate Choices
Exotic animals like corn snakes require specific substrate choices to ensure their wellbeing and mimic their natural habitats. The substrate is important for both aesthetic and functional purposes within the reptile enclosure. We have several options available that mimic corn snake’s natural habitat while ensuring easy maintenance for you.
We recommend beech woodchips, which clump together with moisture, making it easier to see and remove waste, as well as providing a soft bedding.
Avoid substrates like sand or cedar shavings, as they can be harmful. Sand poses an ingestion risk, and cedar contains oils that can be toxic. Paper towels are an alternative for a cost-effective option, however we suggest using the paper towels as a temporary bedding or for transport, and don’t recommend it as permanent bedding.
-
Adding Decor and Accessories
Finally, on to practising your interior decorating. To create a happy environment for your corn snake, it’s important to incorporate decor and accessories that mimic their natural habitat. This not only makes the enclosure more visually appealing but also provides essential enrichment for your snake. Here are some key elements to consider:
-
Hides: Place at least two hides, one on the warm side of your vivarium and one on the cool end, to give your corn snake security and help with temperature regulation.
-
Branches: Add sturdy branches like grapevine or cork oak to encourage climbing and exploration, mimicking their natural behaviour.
-
Plants: Use live or artificial plants to enhance the enclosure’s look, provide cover, and create cozy hiding spots. Trailing plants are a corn snake favourite.
-
Rocks and Logs: Include rocks and logs for a natural feel, extra hiding places, and basking spots.
-
Water Dish: Provide a large water bowl for drinking and soaking to support hydration and shedding.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I handle my baby corn snake?
Young snakes tend to be more skittish than adults, so it's best to handle them gently and briefly at first. Allow them time to sit and get used to their surroundings before increasing handling time. Wait at least 48 hours after feeding before handling to prevent regurgitation. Regular, calm interactions will help build trust over time.
Do I still need hides if my snake has a deep substrate?
Yes. While burrowing provides some security, hides and other shelter options are still important. This ensures they can feel safe while regulating their body temperature. Hides also help reduce stress, making for a happier and healthier snake.
Do I need a vivarium for my corn snake?
Yes, a vivarium is the best choice for a corn snake, as it provides better insulation and helps maintain heat and humidity more effectively. Wooden enclosures are widely recommended for this reason. If using an alternative setup, ensure proper heating and humidity control with a thermostat-regulated heat source to keep your snake comfortable.
Can artificial plants harm my corn snake?
Artificial plants are safe as long as they are non-toxic, securely attached, and free from sharp edges. Some plastic plants have stiff or jagged parts that could harm your snake if they rub against them. Opt for soft, flexible artificial foliage and regularly check for any wear or loose parts that could be accidentally ingested.
